Description

This is a redux and addition of my Soviet Naval uniforms, this is the uniform of a Starshiy Leytenant (Senior Lieutenant, equivalent to a Royal Navy Sub-lieutenant or US Navy Lieutenant Junior Grade) in the RKKF (Workers' and Peasants' Red Fleet before its rename to the "Soviet Navy" in 1946).

On the left is the Summer uniform, it was introduced by the order of the USSR People's Commissar of Defence for naval forces of the Red Army №52 from 16th April 1934. It was made from a bleached linen material which breathed well in the summer heat, similar summer "White" uniforms were issued to the Army and Air Force, however there were differences between the Navy and Army versions. For example before 1943, the army summer officer uniforms were usually just white versions of Gimnastyorkas rather than a Kitel jacket until 1943 when the Officer "Kitel" was introduced. The Navy summer kitel had no lower pockets and it's breast pockets were large and open without flaps, although white trousers were occasionally worn alongside it before the war, the most common usage was a white tunic with black trousers and a white topped visor cap, it was white material sewn on rather than a simple cap "cover".

In the middle is the most common officer uniform, this is the regular Naval Kitel uniform introduced by the order of People's Commissar of Defence of the USSR by the naval forces of the Red Army № 52 on April 16th, 1934. This uniform would remain relatively the same until the end of the Soviet Union in 1991. In 1943 with addition of shoulder board rank, the uniform was edited slightly adding shoulder loops for application of the shoulder rank, shortened sleeve braid and the addition of two brass buttons on the cuffs of the jacket but the overall design remained basically the same. You may recognise it from movies such as The Hunt for Red October: gndn.files.wordpress.com/2015/…

On the right is the Officer Shinel (Overcoat) as before, this would remain relatively the same until the end of the Soviet Union, in fact I believe they still issue a similar style coat to Russian Naval Officers in modern day. It was introduced by the order of People's Commissar of the Navy of the USSR № 45 from January 24, 1941, it was made of black wool and had two rows of 6 buttons on each side (two are hidden by the belt). As with the Kitel, the sleeve insignia went from "seam to seam" on the arm, later in 1943 this was shortened. He is also wearing the Navy Ushanka, Introduced by the order of People's Commissar of Defence of the USSR by the naval forces of the Red Army №52 from 16 April 1934, Officers and Senior NCO's wore the Officer cap badge sewn or pinned onto the front, regular infantry wore a regular army Red Star.

Here is some great music to go with it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4d4S3…
