Description

This is an example of the Klingon Defence Forces uniform from the 23rd century on wards, not a lot changed in Klingon uniform throughout the middle of the Next Generation, Deep Space Nine or Voyager series, although early on the Next Generation series the shoulder pauldron's were connected into one long piece but the majority of the rest of the uniform remained the same but later they reverted back to the open-collared design similar to the one originally worn by Christopher Llyold's character "Commander Kruge" in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

The Klingon uniform consisted of a metallic shirt, almost like futuristic squared chainmail, the overshirt was made of black fur and on top of that was the "Warriors armour", it's not know how protective this armour actually is supposed to be as in the show, obviously any engagement with the Klingons vs the Heroes, the Klingons usually fell like flies similar to how useless the Stormtroopers armour seemed to be in Star Wars when they fought against the heroes and main characters. This rest of the uniform consisted of leather gauntlets, long leather boots and of course trousers. As for the belt, The standard Imperial uniform belt buckle is silver with silver spheres whilst Officer buckles have black with silver trim and silver spheres and Command staff may have a gold border with silver spheres.

1. The first is a standard Klingon Warrior in KDF uniform.
2. The second is a Klingon Warrior with his disruptor pistol holster, the holster was hung on a metallic chain that slung over the shoulder and would rest against the right hip.
3. The third is a Klingon Commander from a noble house, a baldric (sash) is traditionally worn over the left or right shoulder of noble Klingons and in the later series badges/symbols of the "Great Houses" were worn on the sashs, however in the earlier series the same knife shape badge was worn on the shoulder which apparently comes in 5 variations, the specific one seen in the series worn by many Klingons seems to be 'sutai' or 'The One of Discipline or Maturity' as a sort of badge of honour. This Klingon also has golden glyphs on his vambraces which were worn by Klingon commanding officers.
4. The fourth is a Klingon Captain from a noble house, the uniform is very similar to that of the Commander however the Captain is wearing the stole or "Battle Cloak" it is worn by ship commanders and above, although not often worn when on duty as it is more of a ceremonial piece of the uniform, it was worn during some episodes such as "A Matter Of Honor" when Commander Riker is acting First Officer on board the IKS Pagh under command of Captain Kargan as part of the Federation-Klingon Officer exchange programme, Captain Kargan wore a Battle Cloak throughout this episode and Commander Kruge in "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock"also wore an old version of the Battle Cloak.

There isn't a huge pile of Canon information on Klingon uniform, I don't believe it was explained unlike the Starfleet uniforms, I'm guessing Robert Blackman just tweaked the uniforms slightly without the need to explain every bit of insignia, it was my understanding that the Klingons did not actually have rank insignia as such but instead knew their ranking system by name and deeds/honour however there are fan websites that have diagrams of rank insignia on the discs on the collars of Klingons, however this is never mentioned in the show and the collars are barely seen in the show so I would believe the Canon shows never got around to explaining that. Also the Klingon Defence Forces is meant to be an ironic title for the Klingon's view of "To survive we must expand" which appears to be the Israeli "Defence" Forces ideology in the Palestine also so possibly the were hinting at that reference.
